Integrating Chemistry & Polymer Science Research into the Classroom

Incorporating current research in high school and junior college science classrooms provides an opportunity to enrich laboratories and lectures and enhance student interest in the chemical sciences.  The Symposium will focus on the development of classroom lessons and laboratory activities that integrate ‘real world’ applications of current research topics.  Teachers, graduate students, and university faculty members participating in NSF GK-12 or RET programs are encouraged to participate.   Speakers will give insight into successful strategies on integrating research and engaging student interest.

Applicants will be reviewed by WestEd, an independent, non-profit research, development, and service organization, against Change the Equation’s Design Principles for Effective Philanthropy. Every applicant program will receive detailed feedback on its application’s strengths and weaknesses. The names of programs that apply, but are not admitted will remain strictly confidential.

Criteria for the Media Award included:  (1) audience (institutional, regional, National), (2) richness of message (how well were program goals communicated), (3)  quality of media item, and (4) number of media items submitted.

Finalists were:  University of Connecticut, Polytechnic at NYU, Pennsylvania State University, Portland State University, and the University of Wyoming.

The winners were the University of Connecticut Ingenuity Incubators Program and the University of Wyoming Science Posse.

Criteria for the Outstanding Project Website award were:  (1) visual appeal, (2) organization of material on website, (3) current content, (4) fellow bios are present, clear and interesting, (5) school partners and teachers are identified, (6) user friendly science activities, lessons/labs, curriculum, and presentations available, and (7) project News Events are available.

Finalists were: University of Wyoming, Michigan Technological University, Iowa State University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and University of North Carolina Greensboro.

The winners were Michigan Technological University GlobalWatershed and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Triple Helix.
