Graduate Fellow Partner(s):

How will you continue to integrate an aspect of GK-12 and your partnership with graduate students into your teaching, philosophy, etc.?

The summer research experience has made chemistry in my classroom more exciting. Sharing the experience with my students will give them another option to consider when planning their futures. The inquiry lessons were invaluable in helping my students become better scientists. I’m looking forward to incorporating the ideas/concepts I learned into my classroom and labs. My graduate Fellow and I have a great week planned during my “bonding” unit. The students will be solving a hypothetical problem regarding a damaged ear. By the end of the week, the students will construct a scaffold of an ear to solve the problem. The students will see how biomedical engineering is important in today’s society and how science can be used to create new tissues.

How has the GK-12 experience changed you, and how has your participation changed the GK-12 project?

What I learned during the summer will be passed on to my students. It is important that I am able to give students a modern, accurate idea of what research in biomedical engineering is. I saw how the science disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics and even engineering are “smeared” as students need to know some of each to solve modern day problems. To participate in a research project, collect data that was valuable for the lab, and get my name on an abstract was very exciting. I can’t wait to share my experience with my peers and my students. I don’t know how my participation has changed the GK-12 project. The project designed for me was ideal for the time we had and yielded good results. I thank Dr. Bonassar for having me in his lab group and Robby Bowles for spending so much time teaching me during my project. I would also like to thank Dr. Archer, Dr. Schaffer, Kevin and Nev for all the time and effort they put in to offer an outstanding class for us. I would recommend this class for all science teachers!
